4 Ways to Test Your Dreams
We all have ideas about who we are and dreams of who we should be. Whether it’s a cool profession or a random business idea, as we grow older, we start to believe that more is at stake. We become scared of change, and in some cases we become reluctant to take financial or social risks. So, how do we face our fears, and how do we minimize our risks while at the same time making headway on those “crazy” ideas that we call dreams?
The first step, of course, is to pinpoint your interests, curiosities, and skills. The second step is to put them to the test. The best way to do this is to play with your ideas before making an expensive commitment of time and money. We suggest trying these four ways to try it out:
1. Volunteer and intern
If you’ve always dreamt of being a veterinarian, but have followed a different career path, it’s not too late! Before dropping your current job, complement it by volunteering at a shelter. Working as an intern or volunteer will help you get an insider’s look at any profession. The same goes for choosing or changing your major in college or university.
Working for very little pay, or for free, will give you a good idea of whether or not you will enjoy this work. If the job is more exciting than the prospect of money, you’re on the right track.
If you’ve got no idea about what you want, you can also try things out by working with local organizations and associations. Apply for opportunities and start discovering work you love!
2. Free education
Finding a career path starts way before the first job search, selecting a major can be a challenge in itself. If you’re not quite sure about your educational direction, don’t spend thousands on studying a subject before discovering that you don’t like it.
So, if you’re curious about different professions, take advantage of free online courses to:
learn more about the field and how it matches your interests
connect with other people who are interested in similar things
build skills for free
set yourself apart from your peers
You don’t have to sign up for the entire session, sometimes, it’s enough to just get a taste, if you wanna snooze, stop right there, but if you have gone through an entire course without stopping, you may have found the right one.
We’ve played with many different education platforms, but we've collected our favorites here to share with you.
Theoretical knowledge must always be backed up with practical experience. One great way to put both to the test is by taking part in contests, competitions, or other formally organised events related to the subjects that you're curious about. Keep an eye out for competitions happening at your school and in your community. Compete, get feedback, and grow from the exposure! Compete to challenge yourself and to meet like-minded people. There are competitions for everything, from baking to architecture and more! Check out just a few examples we’ve collected in the shortlist of competitions that we know and support around Moldova.
Starting your own business does not require thousands of dollars of initial investment. Consider starting small, test out those concepts, understand your user base, and design a product to fit their needs. If you’re searching for independence you can start your own business or learn how to make money blogging or freelancing with your skills! We have put together a list of some of the resources and opportunities we find most useful for those considering becoming their own boss.
Determination to reach our goals makes us dynamic, social, and curious, get out there, make connections, ask questions, read-up, and dust off those dreams, pursue them and share them with others!
